Description

The principal image of Shunkoji in Minamiyamashiro is an Important Cultural Property wooden standing Yakushi Nyorai dating to the 10th century. Carved from a single kaya-wood block, it preserves a strong Nara-style lineage related to the celebrated Yakushi image of Gangoji. The sculpture is especially valuable for showing how early Heian single-block carving traditions continued in southern Yamashiro, a region deeply connected to Nara culture. Visitors may view the original image by contacting the temple in advance.
