DescriptionHenjoji Temple, near Hirosawa Pond in Kyoto’s Ukyo Ward, enshrines this wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon as its principal image. The statue is traditionally said to have been installed when the temple was founded in 989 and is attributed to Kosho, the master and father of Jocho, famed for the Amida Buddha at Byodoin’s Phoenix Hall. Designated an Important Cultural Property, it is carved from a single piece of cypress and is noted for its gentle gaze, delicate fingers and flowing drapery. Having survived the temple’s decline and the upheavals of the Onin War, this mid-Heian Kannon can still be viewed at close range during regular inner-sanctuary visits.
