Description

Daigoji Temple in Izaki, Fukuchiyama, enshrines this wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai as its principal image. The statue measures 82.3 cm and was made in 1571. An inscription inside identifies its sculptor as Hogen Kosho of the Kyoto Shichijo school, a lineage descended from Unkei. Kosho later became renowned for creating the Yakushi triad in the Kondo of Toji in Kyoto. The statue shows the balanced proportions, dignified face and controlled flowing drapery characteristic of the orthodox Shichijo Buddhist sculptural tradition of the period. It is designated a cultural property of Fukuchiyama City and provisionally registered by Kyoto Prefecture. Advance contact is required to view the cultural property.
