Description

Choanji Temple in Fukuchiyama enshrines this wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai in its Yakushi Hall. The 104 cm statue dates to the late Heian period and now serves as the maedachi, or front-facing image, for a secret standing Yakushi that is unveiled only once every 33 years. Fukuchiyama City notes the statue’s split-and-joined construction, gentle facial expression and restrained drapery characteristic of the late Heian period. Temple tradition also says that the standing secret image may once have been contained inside this seated statue, making the relationship between the two Yakushi images especially intriguing. The temple is normally open from 9:00 to 17:00, allowing visitors to worship this accessible front image.
