Description

Saizenji Temple in Ishikawa, Yosano, enshrines a wooden standing Amida Nyorai dating to the late Kamakura period. Cultural-property materials from Yosano Town record a height of 149.7 cm, making it unusually large for a Kamakura-period standing Amida image. Set on a pedestal more than one meter high, the statue has a commanding presence. Its slightly forward-leaning posture, complex joined-wood construction and hairline treatment have been noted as reflecting influence from Song-dynasty sculpture. It is described as the tallest standing Buddhist image in the town. The statue is not normally on continuous public display, but the temple opens around the New Year’s Eve bell ceremony each December 31, when the principal image can be viewed.
