Description

Jurinji Temple in Kyoto’s Oharano area enshrines a secret Enmei Jizo Bodhisattva as its principal image. According to temple tradition, the temple was founded in 850 when Emperor Montoku prayed for the safe delivery of Empress Somedono and enshrined an image of Enmei Jizo traditionally attributed to Saicho. The image is normally hidden, but it is unveiled every year on August 23, offering a rare chance to worship the principal image directly. Although the temple is also famous for its connection with the poet Ariwara no Narihira, its very foundation is closely tied to prayers for childbirth and devotion to Jizo.
