Description

Mizuyakushiji in Kyoto’s Shimogyo Ward enshrines a Yakushi Nyorai known as Mizuyakushi. According to temple tradition, in 902 an image of Yakushi appeared from a large pond, prompting Emperor Daigo to order the monk Shobo to establish the temple. The miraculous emergence from water gave rise to the name Mizuyakushi, and the image has long been venerated for healing and relief from illness. It is normally hidden from public view, but is unveiled once a year on January 8 during the Hatsu-Yakushi observance, when visitors may worship the image from 10:00 to 16:00.
