Description

Dairyuji Temple in Kyoto’s Ukyo Ward enshrines a secret image of Ususama Myoo in its Myoo Hall. Ususama is revered as a Wisdom King whose blazing fire burns away impurity and transforms it into purity, and is especially famous in Japan as a guardian of toilets and unclean places. The temple itself is widely known through this devotion, giving rise to popular nicknames associated with Ususama. The image is normally hidden, but the interior of the Myoo Hall is opened to the public on the second Sunday of April and October each year, providing a rare opportunity to worship the figure directly.
