Description

Otokunidera in Nagaokakyo preserves a wooden standing Bishamonten designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Dating to the 12th century in the Heian period, the figure is known for an unusually subdued, melancholy expression and is sometimes called the “Bishamonten of Sorrow.” It is specially displayed in spring and autumn together with the temple’s Eleven-Faced Kannon. The combination of guardian-deity dignity with the calm, introspective quality of late-Heian sculpture makes it one of Otokunidera’s most memorable Buddhist images.
