Description

Shoboji in Yawata enshrines a monumental wooden seated Amida Nyorai in Houn-den Hall. Created in the Kamakura period, the statue stands about 2.8 meters high and reaches roughly 4.8 meters with its halo, and is designated an Important Cultural Property. The serene Buddha forms the chubon chusho preaching mudra, while thirteen small transformation Buddhas appear on the halo. Although unsigned, its style has led scholars to suggest a possible attribution to Kaikei. Originally enshrined in the Hakkakudo at Iwashimizu Hachimangu, it was transferred to Shoboji after the separation of Buddhism and Shinto in the Meiji period. A special public opening is scheduled for November 14–23, 2026.
