Description

Zenkyoan, a subtemple of Kenninji, enshrines a secret image of Marishiten in its dedicated hall. Tradition holds that the founding monk Daikan Seisetsu Shocho brought the deity from Yuan China, and the image has been worshiped here as a guardian deity for nearly seven centuries. Marishiten is revered as a protector of the Buddhist Dharma, and at Zenkyoan the deity is represented seated upon seven boars, a form reflected in the many guardian boar statues around the precincts. The image normally remains concealed inside its shrine and is unveiled only once each year, on October 20. In 2026, the annual unveiling and Great Prajna prayer service begins at 13:00, with visitors allowed inside the hall to worship directly.
