Description

Byodoji Temple, better known as Inabado, enshrines an exceptionally rare wrathful form of Daikokuten with three faces and six arms. Far removed from the familiar benevolent god of fortune, this image preserves the fierce Mahakala-type iconography seen in the Womb Realm Mandala. The three wrathful faces show fangs, while the six arms spread an elephant hide, seize a human and a ewe, and hold a sword across the knees. Normally closed from public view, the image is unveiled only on Kinoe-ne days, once every sixty days. The temple itself describes it as Daikokuten in an Indian-transmitted form, a deity of destruction and creation.
