Description

Joshokoji is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Tenryuji school in the mountain village of Keihoku. Its Buddha Hall enshrines a late-Heian wooden Amida triad. Amida forms the meditation mudra, while Kannon and Seishi Bodhisattvas lean forward on cloud-shaped pedestals in an unusually dynamic raigo composition. The group is designated an Important Cultural Property and is regarded as a pioneering sculptural expression of the immediacy of Amida’s descent, anticipating later Kamakura-period developments. In the quiet setting of this mountain temple, visitors can encounter one of Kyoto’s most unusual surviving Amida triads.
