DescriptionThe Treasure Hall of Daihoonji displays wooden statues of the Ten Great Disciples dating to 1220 in the Kamakura period. Each figure portrays one of Shakyamuni’s ten foremost disciples with striking realism. Inscriptions on the statues of Mokuren and Ubari confirm the hand of the master sculptor Kaikei, and the group is designated an Important Cultural Property as a representative work from his later career. The individualized faces, drapery and sense of age and character give these sculptures an unusually vivid human presence, offering a very different encounter from images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
