Description

The Treasure Hall of Daihoonji, also known as Senbon Shakado, preserves a complete group of six Kannon Bodhisattvas made in 1224 during the Kamakura period: Sho Kannon, Thousand-Armed Kannon, Bato Kannon, Eleven-Faced Kannon, Juntei Kannon and Nyoirin Kannon. An inscription inside the Juntei Kannon identifies the sculptor as Higo Betto Jokei, a master of the Kei school. The group, together with a standing Jizo Bodhisattva, was designated a National Treasure in 2024. Seeing all six powerful Kei-school sculptures together at close range makes this one of Kyoto’s most substantial Buddhist-statue destinations.
