Description

An old Omuro-school Shingon temple in Funasaka, Sonobe-cho, Nantan. Temple tradition says it was founded by Kukai in 810 and later established under Imperial Prince Kakugyo, a son of Emperor Shirakawa, in 1079. Most of the temple complex was lost in wartime fires during the Sengoku period, but the Kamakura-period Niomon Gate survived. The wooden Kongo Rikishi statues enshrined inside the gate, together with the gate itself, are designated Important Cultural Properties. Visitors can see the powerful Agyo and Ungyo guardians at close range through the gate during ordinary worship.
