Description

An old Rinzai Zen temple in Ankokujicho, Ayabe, traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Ashikaga Takauji. The Butsuden Hall enshrines a wooden seated Shaka Nyorai with two attendant figures, designated an Important Cultural Property and attributed to Goen, a sculptor of the En school. The balanced composition of the Shaka triad conveys the refined character of medieval Buddhist sculpture and can be appreciated in the temple’s quiet setting. The grounds are freely accessible, but advance reservation is required to view the interior of the Butsuden Hall.
