Description

Enshrined to the left of the principal image in the Main Hall of Hiden-in, a subtemple of Sennyuji, this wooden seated Amida Nyorai dates to the Kamakura period. With its high topknot and crown, it is known as the Hokan Amida Nyorai. Inscriptions inside the image and its style indicate that it was made by Kaikei relatively early in his career, before he received the rank of Hokkyō. It was designated a Kyoto Prefecture Tangible Cultural Property in 2022. The controlled drapery and taut form clearly show Kaikei’s refined sculptural style. Viewing hours are 9:00–16:00, but advance reservation is required because access may sometimes be unavailable.
