Description

The principal image enshrined in the Hojo of Ryogen-in, a subtemple of Daitokuji. This seated Shaka Nyorai was created in 1250 by the Buddhist sculptor Gyoshin and is designated an Important Cultural Property. Ryogen-in itself was founded in 1502, and its Hojo, Karamon gate, and front gate also survive from the temple’s founding and are designated Important Cultural Properties. A major attraction is the chance to encounter a Kamakura-period principal image roughly 250 years older than the Muromachi-period Zen temple space that surrounds it.
