Description

Hokanji’s five-story pagoda, a landmark of Higashiyama, was rebuilt in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and is designated an Important Cultural Property. Its first story enshrines the Five Wisdom Tathagatas: Dainichi, Shaka, Ashuku, Hosho, and Amida. Opening days are irregular, but when open, visitors may enter from 10:00 to 15:00 and climb as far as the second story. Worshipping the five Buddhas inside a historic pagoda offers one of Kyoto’s most distinctive Buddhist-image experiences.
