Description

This Kamakura-period Monju Bosatsu riding a lion is enshrined in Hokkeji Temple's Main Hall. The bodhisattva sits on a lotus atop the lion, holding a sword in the right hand and a lotus bearing a sutra scroll in the left. X-ray CT examination revealed about 180 enclosed objects, including a reliquary and scrolls, making it an important witness to Monju devotion during Hokkeji's medieval revival.
