Description

The Important Cultural Property Four Seated Buddhas from the Pagoda Base are displayed in Saidaiji Temple's Shuhokan. Made in the Heian period in wood-core dry lacquer, each figure is about 70–75 cm tall. They are thought to have faced outward on the four sides of the first story of one of the temple's pagodas; when Eison repaired them in 1283, they were identified as Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amida, and Shaka.
