Description

The crowned standing Eleven-Faced Kannon is specially displayed in the Main Hall of Fukuchiin Temple. Unlike more familiar forms of the Eleven-Faced Kannon, this elegant and unusual image wears a jeweled crown. Tradition holds that it once protected the rear demon gate of Ise and that, after the anti-Buddhist destruction of the early Meiji era, it was brought to Fukuchiin through a fortunate connection. Its refined, somewhat exotic appearance and the history of its relocation give the image a distinctive sense of mystery. Normally closed to the public, it will be specially displayed from October 17 to 23 and again from November 1 to 7, 2026, from 9:00 to 16:00.
