DescriptionThe Important Cultural Property standing wooden Bato Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined in Daianji Temple's Ibara Hall. Carved from a single block of wood in the Nara period, it stands 173.5 cm high. Unlike the familiar form of Horse-Headed Kannon, it bears no horse head above the crown; instead, necklaces, snakes coiled around the ankles, and an animal skin at the waist create an exceptionally unusual iconography that may preserve an early form of Bato Kannon. Although officially designated as a Thousand-Armed Kannon, temple tradition has long identified and worshipped it as Bato Kannon for protection from misfortune. Normally hidden, it is specially opened every March 1–31.
