DescriptionThe Important Cultural Property seated wooden Maitreya Buddha is enshrined as the principal image of Mirokuji Temple's Main Hall. Dating to around the 10th–11th century of the Heian period, the statue is 147.3 cm high. Nearly the entire figure, including both legs, was carved from a single massive piece of broadleaf wood thought to be cherry, making it an exceptionally rare large-scale single-block sculpture. Its substantial body and calm expression make it one of the notable surviving examples of Heian-period Buddhist sculpture in Nara. Viewing is generally available from 9:00 to 16:00, but advance telephone reservation is required to see the Maitreya image.
