Description

The Important Cultural Property Amida Triad is enshrined as the principal image of Chogakuji Temple's Main Hall. It consists of Amida Nyorai in the center, flanked by Kannon Bosatsu and Seishi Bosatsu, and bears an inscription dated 1151 from the late Heian period. The figures combine substantial volume with realistic modeling and are regarded as the oldest Buddhist statues in Japan to use crystal eyes. It is also unusual that both attendant bodhisattvas are shown seated in a half-lotus posture on chairs. The Main Hall is normally open to visitors, and the temple is open year-round from 9:00 to 17:00.
