Description

The Important Cultural Property seated Aizen Myoo is enshrined in the central shrine of Saidaiji Temple's Aizendo Hall. It was created in 1247 during the Kamakura period by the Buddhist sculptor Zen'en, with Eison as the principal patron and his disciple Hannon as donor, as a prayer for the enduring presence of the Three Treasures at Saidaiji. The painted wooden statue stands 31.8 cm tall. Though small, its vivid red body, one face, three eyes, six arms, and wrathful expression give it intense power. Aizen Myoo embodies the esoteric Buddhist teaching of purifying desire and transforming it into proper life force. Normally kept hidden, it is specially unveiled twice a year.
