DescriptionThe standing Shaka Nyorai enshrined on the central altar of Saidaiji Temple's Main Hall is the temple's principal image. Designated an Important Cultural Property, it was consecrated in 1249 during the Kamakura period. Eison sent the sculptor Zenkei and others to Seiryoji Temple in Kyoto to copy the famous living-image Shaka statue brought from Song China by Chonen. The statue stands 167 cm tall, with kirikane decoration applied to the bare wood surface and numerous dedicatory objects sealed inside. It remains the central image of the Shaka faith of Eison's lineage. The Main Hall is normally open from 8:30 to 16:30, with admission until 16:00.
