Description

The Important Cultural Property standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined as the principal guest image of Saidaiji Temple's Shio-do Hall. The wooden, lacquered and gilded statue was made in 1145 during the Heian period by the Buddhist sculptor Enshin as the principal image of Juichimendo-in in Shirakawa, Kyoto, and stands 590.8 cm tall. After that hall collapsed, an imperial order from Retired Emperor Kameyama brought the statue to Saidaiji in 1289, where it has since been worshipped in Shio-do Hall. The hall is normally open from 8:30 to 16:30, with admission until 16:00.
