Description

The Important Cultural Property standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu is the principal image of Kairyuoji Temple's Main Hall. Dating to the Kamakura period, it is said to have been made by a sculptor of the Kei school based on an Eleven-Faced Kannon traditionally believed to have been carved by Empress Komyo, and stands 94.0 cm tall. The cypress-wood statue is finished with gold pigment; its robes have richly colored grounds and intricate kirikane patterns, while the crown and ornaments use gilded copper and small glass beads. It is normally viewed through a curtain, with a special opening from October 24 to November 10, 2026.
