Description

The National Treasure standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu is the principal image of Hokkeji Temple's Main Hall. Standing 1.00 meter tall, it is carved from a single piece of high-quality kaya wood in a danzo-like style that emphasizes the natural grain and has an unusual halo decorated with lotus buds and leaves. Long protected as a hidden image, it retains delicate details such as faint red on the lips, the right hand gently holding the edge of the heavenly scarf, the left hand holding a vase, and the right foot stepping slightly forward. It is normally closed to the public; the 2026 autumn special opening is from October 24 to November 10.
