DescriptionThe wooden Kongo Rikishi statues (Agyo and Ungyo) are enshrined in the Niomon Gate of Sekiganji Temple. Dated to 1242 and created by Higo Hokkyō Jōkei, both figures are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. During the wars of the late Sengoku period, most of the temple complex was destroyed by fire, while the gate survived. The pair still stand on either side of the entrance, displaying taut physiques and dynamic poses characteristic of Kamakura-period guardian sculpture. They can be viewed directly during temple visiting hours.
