Description

In the Main Hall of Jissoji Temple (Tamonji), the wooden standing Nikko Bosatsu and Gakko Bosatsu are enshrined to the right and left of the hidden principal image, Bishamonten. Both are Heian-period statues made with the joined-block technique and finished with lacquer and gold leaf, and both are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. During the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake they fell from the altar and were badly damaged, but were restored and are now once again enshrined in the Main Hall. Interior viewing is available by advance reservation, allowing visitors to worship the two images at close range.
