Description

The Hyogo Daibutsu is enshrined on the grounds of Nofukuji Temple. The present statue is a bronze seated Vairocana Buddha rebuilt in May 1991. The figure itself is 11 meters high, with a 3-meter lotus pedestal and a 4-meter base, for a total height of 18 meters. Its predecessor, erected in 1891, was lost in 1944 through wartime metal requisition. It is introduced as one of Japan’s three great Buddha statues alongside those of Nara and Kamakura, and continues to be worshipped as a Buddha associated with the fulfillment of a single heartfelt wish. The outdoor statue can be viewed from the temple grounds.
