Description

This bronze standing Sho Kannon, also known as the “Aitata Kannon,” is one of Kakurin-ji Temple’s best-known Buddhist images. The 83 cm statue dates to the Hakuho period and is distinguished by its noble, lightly twisting stance and flowing celestial robes. It is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Before World War II it was exhibited in Germany, and after the war it was also shown in the United States as a representative example of Japanese Buddhist sculpture. It is displayed in the Treasure Hall, but checking the current exhibition status before visiting is recommended.
