DescriptionThe principal image of Nakayama-dera Temple’s Main Hall is a wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon. About 1.51 meters tall and carved from a single piece of kaya wood, it is regarded as a Heian-period work and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Temple tradition says the image originated from Queen Śrīmālā of ancient India, who had it carved in her own likeness out of a vow to save women. Two additional Eleven-Faced Kannon images flank it in the Main Hall, so the three statues together represent thirty-three faces. The principal image is normally hidden and is unveiled on the 18th of every month.
