DescriptionThe principal image of Honzanji Temple is a wooden standing Bishamonten dating to the late Heian period and designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The imposing image has long been the focus of worship at this mountain temple and is traditionally associated with the devotion of the Sengoku-period warlord Matsunaga Hisahide. Normally kept hidden, it is specially unveiled after services on the second Sunday of May and the second Sunday of November each year, providing rare opportunities to view the principal image itself.
