DescriptionKyuanji Temple's Amida Hall houses a wooden seated Amida Nyorai believed to date from the late Heian period, in the 12th century. Designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, the image is thought to be made of joined cherrywood and retains traces of gilt lacquer. Tradition holds that it survived the 1140 fire that destroyed the temple's predecessor, Anyoin, together with the principal Thousand-Armed Kannon. The Amida Hall is normally closed, but the statue can be viewed during the cultural property opening from 14:00 to 15:00 on the 15th of every month except August.
