DescriptionThe Wooden Seated Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon Bosatsu enshrined in Aoume Kannon Hall at Ankoji Temple is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Believed to date from the late 10th century in the Heian period, it is about 140 cm high and has eleven faces and forty-two arms. It is exceptionally large for a seated Thousand-Armed Kannon and is regarded as one of the largest examples of its type in Japan. It originally served as the principal image of Anshoji Temple in Makami and was brought to Ankoji as a guest image after Anshoji was abandoned. The temple's current official website states that it is opened on Sundays and public holidays.
