Description

Enshrined in the grounds of Hozenji Temple, the West-Facing Fudo Myo-o is affectionately known as Mizukake Fudo. Worshippers continuously pour water over the image while making prayers, giving it a distinctive appearance almost entirely covered in vivid green moss. Hozenji is said to have been moved from Uji in Yamashiro Province to Namba in 1637, and the Mizukake Fudo survived when the temple buildings were destroyed in the 1945 Osaka air raids. It remains one of the best-known devotional images in Osaka’s Minami district and can be worshipped 24 hours a day.
