DescriptionThe principal image of Gachirinji Temple is a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai. Dating to around the beginning of the 13th century in the Kamakura period, it measures 97 cm high and is constructed from joined pieces of cypress, with much of its lacquer-and-gold-leaf finish still preserved. Its halo bears forty rays of light. According to temple tradition, Morokoshi Chōja received a Yakushi Nyorai image from Kūkai in the early Heian period, and after his death his wife returned to her home in Mikkaichi, built a hall at the present site, and enshrined it as the principal image. It is normally closed to the public, with the Main Hall opened every year on June 8.
