DescriptionThe wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon is enshrined inside a cabinet in the Kannon Hall of Iwamuro-san Kannon-in Temple. Measuring 126.0 cm high, it is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Osaka Prefecture. Except for the subsidiary heads and part of the celestial garment, the figure was carved from a single piece of cypress from the topknot down to the lotus beneath the feet, without hollowing, and most of the surface was left unpainted apart from the hair, brows and eyes. It is therefore regarded as a danzo-style sculpture made from a substitute wood. Its archaic technique and restrained posture suggest a date around the middle Heian period, while another view places it as late as the Kamakura period because of Song-style elements in the elongated face and drapery. Normally hidden, it is unveiled only on August 10 each year during the Sennichi Festival.
