DescriptionThe principal image of Jigenji Temple, popularly known as Nozaki Kannon, is a wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu in the Main Hall. Dating to the middle Heian period, it is carved from a single piece of sandalwood and stands on the back of a dragon moving through swirling waves, an unusual form. Its calm half-closed eyes have given rise to the affectionate nickname “Sleeping Kannon.” Temple tradition says that Gyoki carved and enshrined an Eleven-Faced Kannon here, and that the principal image survived when the temple complex burned in 1565. Normally hidden, it is unveiled every year from May 1 to 8 during Nozaki Mairi.
