Description

The hidden principal image of Aizendo Shoman-in Temple’s Kondo is Aizen Myoo. Shown with a blazing red body, three eyes and six arms in a wrathful form, the deity symbolizes the transformation of attachment and desire into awakening. The temple is traditionally said to have been founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku as the Seyaku-in of Shitennoji, and the present Kondo was rebuilt in 1618 under Tokugawa Hidetada. It is also the first temple of the Saigoku Aizen Seventeen Sacred Sites. The principal image is normally hidden and can be worshipped during special unveilings at New Year and the Aizen Festival; in 2026 it was unveiled from January 1 to 10.
