DescriptionThe National Treasure Wooden Seated Yakushi Nyorai is the principal image of Shishikutsuji Temple. It is thought to date from the late 9th to early 10th century in the Heian period. Measuring 92 cm high, the head, torso, shoulders, and part of the knees were carved from a single piece of kaya wood. Each spiral of hair was individually formed in dry lacquer; the pupils and lips retain coloring, and a red manji is painted on the chest. Its long, narrow eyes, deeply cut brows, and flowing robe folds show the mature technique of 9th-century single-block sculpture. It was designated a National Treasure in 1968. The statue is normally kept in a repository and viewing requires a reservation with the temple at least one week in advance.
