Description

The Kuze Kannon Bosatsu (Nyoirin Kannon) is the principal image of Shitennoji Temple’s Kondo. Shitennoji is traditionally said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku in 593. The Four Heavenly Kings were the original principal deities, while from the Heian period onward Kuze Kannon became the principal image. The Kondo stands at the heart of the central temple compound; the present hall was reconstructed on its original site after wartime destruction. Visitors can worship the principal image inside the Kondo during regular viewing hours, and it serves as the principal image for several pilgrimage circuits, including the first temple of the New Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage.
