DescriptionThe Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Kannon is the pilgrimage principal image of Sefukuji Temple’s Main Hall and the central object of worship at the 4th temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Tradition holds that it was created in 1604 together with Miroku Nyorai, Monju Bosatsu, and the Four Heavenly Kings through the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyori and Lady Yodo. Inside the Main Hall, visitors can also view many other Buddhist images, including an unusual Bato Kannon whose sole faces forward and a large Katatagae Kannon more than four meters high. This concentration of Buddhist sculptures makes the temple especially worthwhile for visitors whose main interest is the images themselves.
