DescriptionThe Standing Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon is the principal image of Katsuoji Temple’s Main Hall. The present principal image was created and installed when the Main Hall was rebuilt in the Edo period and remains the central object of devotion at the 23rd temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. Temple tradition says that the sculptor Myokan carved an earlier Thousand-Armed Kannon in 780; that image was later lost to fire during warfare, while the temple’s Kannon devotion continued. The present image can be worshipped during regular temple hours, and a Kannon ennichi service is held on the 18th of every month.
