DescriptionThis wooden standing Bishamonten is the omaedachi principal image enshrined in the Main Hall of Daijobo Temple. Dating to the mid-Kamakura period, it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Daijobo’s principal image is an unusual arrangement of four standing Bishamonten figures placed in a row, and this statue is the second from the front. The two statues at the rear are hidden images, while the omaedachi can normally be viewed from the outer sanctuary. Although the temple buildings were lost in wartime destruction, the principal image survived and continues to be worshipped as the “Bishamon of Nagamachi.”
