DescriptionThe principal image enshrined in the Kondō of Kanshin-ji Temple, this wooden seated Nyoirin Kannon is thought to date from the mid-9th century in the Heian period and measures 109.4 cm in height. Carved from a single block of wood, it has six arms and retains vivid coloring and fine decorative patterns over much of the body. It is also said to have been commissioned by Empress Tachibana no Kachiko and is designated a National Treasure. Normally closed to the public, it is unveiled only on April 17 and 18 each year.
